Who was Vitus Bering?
Vitus Jonassen Bering was born in Horsens in 1681 and became one of the most accomplished explorers in the world. His expeditions under Russian colours, determined that Asia and America are separate continents.
Horsens' most famous son made history by boldly sailing unknown waters. With skill, courage and vigour he led scientific expeditions that later immortalised his name.
Therefore the name Vitus Bering was the obvious choice for this internationally oriented institution.
